Practical Application of Unit Conversion in Everyday Life

Unit converters are now a part of our everyday needs. We need to calculate our local currency exchange with foreign currencies. We need to calculate our heights, measure weights and relay time values in other simpler or sophisticated units.

The two main measurement systems are the metric and customary units. Majority of the world countries make use of the metric system, while the United States, make use of the customary units.

Often, you will need to convert from one unit to another. When converting from a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply. And when converting from a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide.

In this article, we will cover how to convert from one unit to another, how to convert units of length measurement, mass, volume, time, currency, time and weight units.

WHAT IS A UNIT?

A unit of measurement is a system that measures the size or value of something. A unit can be converted to another, using scaling systems or a standard unit converter.

WHY DO WE HAVE TO CONVERT UNITS

Just like currencies, different units serve and represent different magnitudes. And instruments may vary from the other, hence, in order to be able to calculate easily and represent every unit in a single system we need to unit conversions. One of such unit converter is DocFather unit converter that has over 500+ unit conversion categories, and boasts of accuracy and easy navigation.

There are two systems of unit measurement used worldwide: the metric system and the customary or imperial system. Most of the world use a metric system, while the United States and a few other countries use the imperial system.

How to convert units of measurement

  1. When converting from a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply. For example, convert 4 feet to inches. We have, 1 feet = 12 inches, therefore, 4 feet = 4×12 = 48 inches.

  2. When converting from a larger unit to a smaller unit, divide. For example, convert 60 inches to feet. We will divide 60 by 12 which gives us 5 feet. 60 inches ÷ 12 = 5 feet.
